However, the teacher and educators were not properly trained for this task. So the implementation was stalled. Finally, the CBSE board released a manual for educators, which was recommended and enforced.
However, this manual was severely opposed by the parents and school authorities, simply because it did not comply with Indian culture, our legal system, tradition, values and the way we look at sexuality.
So, the bill was finally stalled, until now. Dr. Rajan Bhonsle, M.D., a Senior Counsellor and Consultant in Sexual Medicine from Mumbai, practicing for 20 years has written a manual for sex education in schools as well as for parents.
We spoke to Dr. Bhonsle about the book and what it has to offer for the Indian child, parent and education departments.
Dr. Bhonsle, tell us, what is this book all about?
Basically, this is a manual to help parents and teachers educate kids of today about sex and sexuality. It is called 'Source book for sex educators - for parents and teachers'.
But, all this is done putting our culture and values into account. I have written it in such a way that no one would oppose. These are 20 years of my experience and views on sex education.
What are the key things a parent needs to know while educating their child about sex?
Start early. That is the key to any kind of education. You need to teach your child to be comfortable her body, including her genitals.
You should always make it a point to reiterate that her genitals are as important as her other body parts. It is not dirty or ugly. These values have to be inculcated from childhood.
Remember, if she can say that she has two eyes and two ears, she can also say that she has a vagina.
It is not a shameful part of your body. So, she should be proud of it.
