Floral jewellery is soon becoming a huge trend in bridal fashion. We spoke about this art with Dolly Thakkar who has been making floral jewellery for many years now.
When did you start making floral jewellery?
My love for flowers started long time back, in 1980/81, as I am into flower arrangements. The first time I made floral jewellery, I made it for myself, as I am not too comfortable wearing jewellery.
What was your inspiration for this art?
I had a very important wedding coming up for which I had to wear jewellery. As I love flowers I made myself a jewellery set of real flowers.
Everyone at the wedding loved my jewellery and that encouraged me to make it for others. Since flowers are so auspicious, I thought it would be great for brides.
Did your learn it from someone?
I haven't learned this art from somewhere. It was just the interest that motivated me to make floral jewellery. Also my creativity played an important role.
Has this art been in India from a long time?
This art form has been in India for a long time but recently people have adopted it and started wearing it.
Why brides?
Floral jewellery is not restricted to brides. Anybody who likes it can wear it. It is very unique and makes one feel special. That is the reason why brides prefer wearing it on their wedding day or on other occasions.
How long does the jewellery last?
Floral jewellery lasts throughout the wedding. In fact, if you keep it under refrigeration, it will survive for about three days.
What are the options available in floral jewellery?
Floral jewellery has a wide range and you can get everything you want. The set includes a pair of earrings, necklace, mang tika, bracelet and anklets. But if you need something extra such as baju band (arm band/bangle), it can be provided.
We even make floral dupattas!
What are the different types of flowers used?
The type of flower used depends on the client's choice and the colour of her outfit. Usually all types of flowers are used to make flower jewellery, but it is easier to make jewellery out of small flowers rather than large ones.
Roses and orchids are the most popular types of flowers used for jewellery.
How much time goes into making it?
It takes one whole day to make a set of floral jewellery. If one has to place an order we prefer it at least 10-15 days in advance, as there are some preparations we need to do before making it.
I need to meet the bride to discuss the colour of her outfit and what flowers will match it. The jewellery is made free size so she won't need to come for measurement trials.
