"My Children Are My Priority"

A health and fitness enthusiast, Shalini Bhargava runs her own fitness centre - JG's - and is founder-director of the Indian Fitness and Aerobic Institute (IFAI). She juggles her professional commitments even as she plays mom to her two kids.

My Kids, My Life
My children are my number one priority. I have been married for 15 years and back then it was a conscious decision not to work.
When my kids were small, both my doctor husband and I were just about starting our careers together. I decided to take on less work as I wanted to be there for my kids.
My mum-in-law was always there to look after my children, which she does even today despite not keeping too well. My son is 12-years-old now and my daughter eight.
I do most of my work from 8.30 in the morning to 4 in the evening because they are in school then. Ninety-nine per cent of the time I am at home when they are there to see to their needs.
However, I have taught them to be independent. When I am not around, they do their own homework, eat food; my mum-in-law is also around.
Growing up, my kids have always seen me working, so they understand. Moreover, if you are starting your career after marriage, you need to plan it right.
A good idea is to do so when your kids have grown up and do not need you around as much.
I Love What I Do
Though I was never into sports, I have always been very active. I am a trained classical dancer and in a way it was important for me to be fit and active.
But it was only after my first child that I got into fitness to lose the post-pregnancy fat. Around the same time I did a course in fitness and from then on I was hooked.
I have devoted myself to fitness for the last 10 years. In any profession, full-time or part-time, you have to love what you do.
Constantly keep learning and updating yourself. As an entrepreneur, it is important for me to know what I am doing; I cannot depend on a manager.
You have to be responsible. Ultimately, your staff has to respect you. The only way to achieve that is by leading by example and being a professional in whatever you do.
Though I have a qualified and trained staff, I still take classes.
