I had a C-section and was not allowed to breastfeed my baby. For the first two months after my delivery I was very weak and could not do much. I could not look after my baby but my sisters and my parents helped me so much.
We did not celebrate Yatin Kiran's first birthday because you cannot be sure whether a baby is infected or not till it is 18 months old.
"Our dream is to see our son turn 20."
Once you have a child, it is no longer only about you. You need to plan for the future of your child too. You need to decide what level of education you want to provide your child with.
If anything were to happen to you, your child should be financially secure and you must have a guardian for your child.
"We have to explain to our son that his parents have HIV."
My son is only five years old so we haven't yet told him anything. We are waiting till he is about 12 years so he is mentally mature to handle the news. We have also prepared our family to tell him just in case we are not around.
Meanwhile we make the most of the time we have with our son.
"It is an ongoing process."
My husband has been living with HIV for the past 19 years and has been on anti-retroviral drugs for the past three years. I, however, do not need any medication.
We look after our diet and follow a routine to keep good health, especially when we are travelling.
Asha Ramaiah has battled all odds. Her story is an inspiration to other HIV+ women. It is about believing in your dream and pursuing it to the end.
