Jajati Karan, Orissa: Diwali is incomplete without diyas. But this Diwali, the trend has slightly inclined towards designer diyas, which are much in demand.
This Diwali CNN-IBN take you to a village in Bolangir district of Orissa which has mastered the art of making beautiful designer diyas. The potters from Malamunda village in Bolangir district of Orissa have their hands full this Diwali.
Their specialty, terracotta designer diyas, are in huge demand. Several families in the village are working throughout the day to make sure that the supply of these diyas does not fall short. 39-year-old Gouracharan Rana, a master terracotta craftsman, along with his entire family, is busy making the diyas but is finding it tough to keep pace with the huge demand.
The master craftsman says, “Earlier people used to demand only simple diyas but now everybody wants designer diyas even though they are expensive."
The price range varies from modest five rupees for a small one to one thousand for the tall embellished diyas. But the irony is that the hands that make the diyas can't light them at their own homes.
Another terracotta artisan, Pratima Rana tells us, “We are poor and we make a living by selling these diyas. We cannot use the expensive ones on Diwali even if we want to. However we feel happy that our diyas are used elsewhere."
The demand for these designer lamps comes from as far as Delhi and Mumbai.
