Rohit Khilnani, Mumbai: Writing and being written about are the latest bugs to have bitten Bollywood stars.
And the victims include the likes of Shah Rukh Khan, Dev Anand, Sunil and Nargis Dutt, Hema Malini, Vyajayanthimala.
Film critic and writer Anupama Chopra promised everything-you-wanted-to-know-about-Shah Rukh Khan with her 222-page book titled King of Bollywood.
And then the evergreen 84-year-old, Dev Anand penned down a tell all autobiography with intimate details of his sexcapades and flings over the years, some of which included popular actresses.
In between all this Vyajanthimala decided to bring out some skeletons from the closet with her memoir Bonding.
Hema Malini endorsed the one and only book written on her and the launch of the book on the Dutt's by their children became one of the most widely publicised event of the month.
Publishers believe that there is a lot of curiosity about the personal lives of film stars and very little authentic or official written material out there.
So given that the demand for biographies and memoirs being very high, here's what seems to be making a mark on the best seller's list.
- Dev Anand's Romancing with life has sold around 7,000 copies.
- Mr and Mrs Dutt: Memories of our parents has sold around 6,000.
- Hema Malini: The Authorized Biography has sold 5-6,000.
- Shah Rukh Khan: King Khan by Deepa Gahlot has sold 4,000 copies.
- Helen: The Life and Times of an H-Bomb has sold 2,500 copies.
- King of Bollywood:Shah Rukh Khan by Anupama Chopra has sold over 10,000.
So the biography on Shah Rukh by Chopra seems to be the hot pick for readers for a couple of reasons.
The book captures his struggling days very honestly so by the time you reach the last few chapters on his larger than life persona you kind of feel that he deserves the credit.
It is attractively packaged. It is a paperback book just 222 pages long and very reasonable priced at 395.
But here's what would be a better pick any day- a tell all autobiography by the legendary big screen Diva Rekha.
