Prerna Uppal, New Delhi: One fourth of women who die while giving birth are Indian, according to a UN report. And what's worse, health agencies find that 90 per cent of these deaths can be prevented.
It's figures like these that have led to the launch of Jeevan Dor, a radio programme that focuses on maternal health.
The Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecological Studies (FOGSI), which launched the program in July, is also working on a docu-drama for television audiences.
"The lack of awareness among the lower socio-economic section and the vast reach of TV and radio prompted us to do this," says President, FOGSI, Dr Pankaj Desai.
In fact, 300 young mothers in India die every day due to anaemia, convulsions due to extraordinarily high BP - a condition called eclampsia, and even sepsis.
These are all preventable conditions, but it's awareness which is the challenge.
"The economically challenged are affected the most," says Desai.
FOGSI hopes to bring down that number and save lives with their initiative through dramatisations and potentially life-saving tips.
