Tokyo: Think of any major superhero film and try to remember who played the female lead in it. Chances are you won't remember.
That's because even though some very fantastic actresses have played the love interest opposite our men in tights, they've failed to make a marked impression.
Except perhaps for Margot Kidder who played Lois Lane opposite Christopher Reeves in all three Superman films.
Can you remember who was cast opposite Christian Bale in Batman Begins? Or the new Lois Lane opposite Brandon Routh in Superman Returns? Probably not.
But everyone knows MJ Watson from the Spider-Man films, and actress Kirsten Dunst who plays Peter Parker's childhood sweetheart says it's because of what she brings to the role.
In Tokyo last week, CNN-IBN Entertainment Editor Rajeev Masand chatted with Kirsten Dunst about why MJ stands out in a boys film like Spider-Man.
Rajeev Masand: What's it like getting into a Spider-Man film. Is each experience different from the other?
Kirsten Dunst: It is because we've changed as people so much. There's usually a two-year period before we start the next one and I started these films when I was 17. I'll be 25 at the end of this month and I have completely changed and gone through so many things in my life.
In the third we all came together as true, complete adults collaborating. So this one was the most exciting one to make I think.
Rajeev Masand: What is it about Mary Jane that makes her stand out even in an ensemble of so many villains and in a story which isn't focusing just on the romance?
Kirsten Dunst: It's because I'm playing her and I bring a lot to the role. As we hear in the first and the second movies, 'It’s all about a girl' and behind every great man is a great woman.
Rajeev Masand: Do you enjoy the films when you watch them? The whole Spider-Man film is an exhilarating adventure for an audience. Do you enjoy watching it as well or or are you so close to it that you spot the cables and the wires and see what's going wrong with them?
Kirsten Dunst: I actually do spot those things. Plus I hate watching myself on-screen. So the first time I see it I get a migraine. It's in the second viewing when I see it with my family that I have some perspective.
Rajeev Masand: There is all this talk of this being the end of Spider-Man's journey. You have said all along that you will come back if Sam (director Sam Raimi) and Tobey are back. Is that really the only thing that will bring you back?
Kirsten Dunst: Yes, that's our team.
Rajeev Masand: All the best. Looking forward to seeing much more from you.
Kirsten Dunst: Thank You.
