Vibha Sachdeva, New Delhi: “Eat your bowl of dahi!”
It may not sound like the most inspiring health advice but apart from being tasty yoghurt has the good bug, probiotics.
Probiotics are live microorganisms that are good for your health. If you are getting enough of them in your diet then they are certainly helping your digestion as they live in your intestine and strike a balance with other not so- friendly bacteria.
“Probiotic is a preventive system that the body has developed to protect itself against infections from outside. It is present in the form of bacteria. Lacto bacilli and bafido bacilli are the two important bacterias that form a part of the system,” says nutritionist, Dr Rupali Dutta.
One third of urban Indians have digestive disorders, doctors say. And that's where probiotics come in to help you tackle those digestive issues.
Probiotics enhance the immune system, improve digestion of lactose and reduce intestinal bloating and discomfort. They also help prevent diarrhoea.
Companies plan to launch probiotic ice creams in India. And besides that there are also probiotic drinks and probiotic-enhanced frozen desserts available.
But even as the food goes hi-tech, don't forget your regular bowl of dahi actually has all the good bacteria you need.
