Prerna Uppal, New Delhi: Marc Kosak, the man who invented the world's first non-reusable syringe has made a film on the subject called One Injection One Syringe.
It's the story of a 13-year old boy who contracts AIDS after he gets a shot from a re-used syringe.
Kosak is currently in Delhi to spread the message of one injection-one syringe.
Marc made the film in an effort to popularise the use of the non-reusable syringe. These injections are rendered useless after one use and this could help control the spread of deadly diseases like HIV and hepatitis.
This is crucial for a country like India especially in the wake of the alarming statistics cited by the India Clinical Epidemiological Network, which says that five to six billion injections are administered every year in India, but only 1.5 billion syringes are sold each year.
This points to the huge incidence of needle re-use in the country and according to World Health Organisation reports, five million Indians are infected by needle re-use each year - this despite the easily availability of disposable syringes.
Koska says that the reason for the spread of deadly diseases through needles is that the trend of non re-usable and disposable syringes hasn't caught on in the curative sector.
The auto-disposable syringe has been available in India for the past five years and has been used to immunise young children. The best part is that this syringe is 25 paise more expensive than a regular disposable syringe.
Despite this however, the use of auto disposable syringes has still not caught on in the country. Mark is now on a mission to spread more awareness about the non-reusable syringe.
