New Delhi: Under fire for its approach to the New Year molestation case, the Mumbai police are now trying to get their act together.
Seven people were reportedly detained by the city police in Juhu for questioning on Wednesday night. Sources say police stations across the city have been alerted and attempts are being made to identify the men who molested two NRI girls outside the JW Marriott hotel on December 31 night.
However, police officials are tight-lipped about the issue. Early on Thursday morning, one of the victims of the incident spoke exclusively with CNN-IBN on conditions of anonymity.
The woman recounted the nightmarish experience but said she hadn’t thought media would take up the issue as aggressively as it did.
She also said she was upset by a certain section of media that mis-reported. Given below are the excerpts:
On the nightmarish night:
We came out of JW Marriot and were crossing the street. It was when we crossed the divider when it started. Initially I didn’t make it a big deal about it – I thought they were people just trying to harass us – but my cousin did not appreciate it.
My goal was to get into a rickshaw or an auto but more people started gathering. My brother and my husband did everything possible to push people away. My clothes weren’t ripped and I wasn’t raped. A nice gentleman came and put us in the cop car and took us to the police station.
On Hindustan Times cameramen:
I don’t know about the camera people. I did see flashbulbs but I did not appreciate the fact that not many people helped.
On lodging no complaint:
We did not think it would turn this big and media would constantly take it up. We just wanted to get over it. That’s why we didn’t bring it up. But when media took it up, we decided public needed to know.
However, I am very upset. Though people need to know what happened, I don’t appreciate people making up stories. Several newspapers reported that there was a rape and my dress was ripped off, it was very upsetting.
I repeat: no one was raped and my dress wasn’t ripped.
On feeling safe:
I don’t think I would never go (out partying in Mumbai or anywhere in India) again. On future course of action: I don’t know if all the people were together or more public joined in later. We don’t even know how many people were present.
We are looking at the pictures trying to find out who was helping us and who was not. We are also trying to figure out things with the Commissioner of Police.
On top cop's controversial statement:
Well, it was us who did not want to give any statement
