Amrita Tripathi, New Delhi: Are you a TOFI? For the uninitiated, that means you are thin outside, fat inside.
However, that's the latest wave of bad news for thin people worldwide. Just because you look thin, doesn't mean you're healthy.
To find out if you’re a TOFI, you need to a get a 64-slice CT scan, which is conventionally used to examine a possibly fractured pelvis.
Internal fat, or visceral or intra-abdominal fat shows up as white patches around organs, in arteries even streaking the liver in the TOFI test. So why is that a cause for concern?
"If someone has high amount of liver fat, person is going to develop high cholesterol, hypertension or diabetes fairly soon," says Endocrinologist, Dr Anoop Misra.
Unhealthy fat deposits also show up in MRI scans that are of course more traditionally used to examine the heart or brain.
But doctors say it's not just internal fat, but the bigger picture that Indians need to worry about.
"Two issues - one is a fat person who does regular exercise, versus a non-obese person who is not fat but doesn't do exercise, well in terms of propensity to develop diseases, perhaps this thin person who does no exercise may develop more diseases than a slightly fat person who does more exercise," says Misra.
This shows that an average weight is clearly not enough of an indicator of good health and the moral of the story is go out and get some exercise.
