Prerna Uppal & Harmanpreet Kaur, New Delhi: It is rare to have successful simultaneous liver and kidney transplants from two live donors – and for a fifteen year old in the capital, it's made all the difference in the world.
Ganesh Nehru was diagnosed last year with advanced kidney failure and a rare amino acid metabolism disorder.
"Ganesh had this condition…because of which he developed kidney failure and deposition of oxalates in the rest of his body. Now the only cure for this condition is liver and kidney combined transplant," said Transplant Surgeon Dr Arvinder Soin.
But due to his family, Ganesh has got a new lease of life. His mother Hemlata donated a kidney while his uncle donated half his liver.
It was an operation that took surgeons 18 hours in transplanting the kidney and the liver on April 17. And the surgery was a success.
"In the world literature as well there is clear documentation of the fact that combined liver and kidney transplants will probably last a lifetime. So, I expect that this child will grow up to be an engineer, which is what he wants to be, and live a pretty normal life from the liver and kidney point of view," said Dr Soin.
"I want to go back to school, play sports," said Ganesh. Ganesh can get back to his life now that he's out of danger and being discharged from hospital.
