New Delhi: After much assurance, the Government failed to take a decision on OBC quota Wednesday night, creating more uncertainty for the IIM aspirants.
Differences have surfaced among UPA partners with key allies DMK, PMK and even the RJD turning down the Government request to allow admission without OBC quota.
The ruling UPA partners and the Left parties will now meet on Thursday to find a way out.
Union Railway Minister and RJD supremo, Lalu Prasad said, "The UPA and the Left will meet again to discuss the issue."
External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee had been asked by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to convince the allies.
Coalition partners insisted they would allow admission provided the Government sent the right signals to the OBC electorate.
The southern allies wanted the Parliament Question Hour suspended and the quota crisis discussed, but the Government refused to acede to this demand.
The parties are threatening to raise the issue in Parliament's session, which resumes on Thursday.
Earlier, the HRD Ministry had decided to allow the admission process to begin. The OBC quota could be implemented as and when the Supreme Court decided on the issue and the Ministry had forwarded the proposal to the Cabinet Committee for Political Affairs.
Both the parties and the IIM aspirants are now hoping that Thursday's meeting will solve the crisis and end the deadlock.
