According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) good sleep is one of the ways where expectant mothers can give their baby a better chance for a healthy and full-term birth.
Jodi A Mindell, PhD, a professor of psychology at St.Joseph's University in Philadelphia says that many women today struggle with sleep problems. Due to surging hormones sleep problems may occur right at the start of the pregnancy. This sleep deprivation can prove dangerous as it can lead to accidental injuries.

Apart from that, sleep deprived expectant mothers are also likely to experience depressed mood, attention and memory problems, excessive daytime sleeping, nighttime falls and usage of over the counter prescriptions. This in turn can effect the healthy development of the baby.
Dr.Mindel says that it is important to get a good nights rest. For this she recommends that you should allow yourself time to unwind before bed and maintain a consistent sleep schedule.

It is also advisable to avoid caffeine and timing your naps.
For a better sleep you can try making your bedroom dark, cool and comfortable or listening to soft music before sleeping. Drinking warm milk is another thing that can help.
