Vibha Sachdeva, New Delhi: You put your favourite perfume to go for a party probably to feel good but did you know that fragrances can also be therapeutic?
We have the capability to distinguish 10, 000 different smells.
Also, it is known that the odours we smell have a significant impact on how we feel. And the inhalation of the essential oils triggers changes within the brain that in turn can stimulate physiological responses within the body via the nervous, endocrine or immune system.
"A lot of research has been done on aroma oils. The chemical components in these oils cure the mind and body directly. For example lime and ginger helps stimulate the blood circulation. There are different oils which benefit people," says spa manager, VLCC, Vidya Bhandari.
Aromatherapy can be administered in a variety of ways. It can be used as oils for massage, bath, inhalation and steaming, mouthwash, vaporisation and compresses.
A massage though is the most effective method, while baths combine oils with the therapeutic value of water. Aromatherapy massage provides relaxation as well as a physiological action through the nervous system.
"The essential oils are applied topically. They are anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal and antiseptic," says Bhandari.
Mainstream medical doctors also swear by the benefits of Aromatherapy. There is a separate aromatherapy unit at Apollo Hospitals in Chennai.
In fact the mainstream medical doctors refer their patients to aromatherapy saying that it as an aid to the mainstream medical science.
"For the treatment of particularly pregnant women where a lot of drugs are restricted, aromathery can be used for the treatment of gynecological problems as well as obstrecal problems. It can also benefit women who are undergoing menopausal phases," says gynaecologist, Dr R Charumathi.
Aromatherapists claim that the therapy can bring relief especially for those with psychosomatic disorders like anxiety, depression and stress. However, they emphasise that it is not a cure but only a supplementary treatment.
So whether you want use aromatherapy for a feel good session or as 'a scent of a cure,' it definitely will help you relax and ease your stressed nerves.
