New Delhi: People with disabilities have a reason to smile as there is a ride now that could finally take care of one's transportation woes.
India gets it's first electric wheelchair, it's equipped with video game like joystick controls, the number pads that decide one's speed, It's easy to get on and with a fold out recliner, even easier to stay put.
Wheelchairs do not get more tech savvy than this, and while it's designer claims its specially adapted to Indian terrain, patients are delighted with it's ease of use.
It's inventor Hari Vasudevan has big plans for it.MD Ostrich Mobility, Vasudevan says, " Normally the wheelchairs available all over consist of a single frame where all the four wheels are fixed, but in my design I divided it into two frames, where the front wheels goes in the first frame and rear wheels go in the second frame, so that both the wheels move with respect to each other."
When Himanshu Mehta, person with disabilities was asked how he finds the wheelchair after using it on a trial basis, he said,"Usually in a wheel chair, one has to manually reverse it, or maneuvering it is a problem, but all this at a touch of a button or a joystick is simply fantastic."
The battery-powered wheelchair runs for almost 25 kilometers after being charged for eight hours, gliding smoothly over rough roads and steep inclines without any assistance.
But as always the catch is the price - a whopping Rs 1,30,000. There are cheaper versions available for Rs 50,000 and one lakh rupees. But with India's 70 million disabled people who are mostly underpaid, the gizmo's commercial viability can be questioned.
