Get a Spacious Bathroom

Is your bathroom cramped, pokey and stuffy?
Well, the truth is it is all in the decor. Try these ideas that will help you create an illusion of depth in your bathroom and help you make the most of the space you have.

- Go with lighter, more neutral shades for the wall tiles rather than darker ones. You could infuse a dash of colour in the form of motif tiles, sanitaryware and accessories as well.
- Chequered flooring tends to divide the bathroom into smaller portions. Light coloured joint-free ceramic flooring would be a better option. It makes the floor appear seamless and hence more spacious.
- Always avoid a false ceiling in a small bathroom. The reduced height makes the room look smaller and less airy.
- Do not enclose the shower area in a cubicle. It tends to make the bathroom look much smaller. If you must separate the wet area from the dry area, use a small ledge and a shower curtain.
- Avoid pedestal washbasins as they occupy too much space. You might also want to stay away from washbasins that are fitted on the counter. Go with one that is flush with the counter top or fitted into the corner instead.
- Optimise the space below the washbasin and fit a cabinet there. You can use it to store detergents, your laundry basket, a waste bin, cleaning agents etc.
- Place a large mirror over your washbasin with a bright light above it. The mirror will reflect the light and give your bathroom more depth.
- Use shelves for storing all those shampoos, shower gels and other bath essentials. You can have them fitted in the corner of the bathroom. This way you don't waste the corners. Opt for glass shelves instead of marble or granite ones as they reflect light and create an illusion of space.
- Avoid bulky storage cabinets above the washbasin for toothbrush holders, toothpaste, soap etc. Instead make niches in the wall on either side of the mirror and fit them with glass shelves.
- Choose chrome plated faucets, mixer, showerheads, etc. Light gets reflected in the plating of these fittings and gives the bathroom a brighter, roomier look.
