Online Dating Dos and Don'ts

DO
- Be completely honest. Just as you would be utterly disappointed if your online date lied to you, the same holds true for him. At the same time…
- Maintain a degree of anonymity. Don't let out everything about yourself - especially classified information like bank accounts, credit card passwords etc.
- Get some background information about the person. Get to know his family and friends online, if possible. It really does not amount to betrayal.
- A reality check. While you may be looking for a one-night stand, he may be on the lookout for a long-term relationship!
- Believe in yourself. Those who are extremely shy or suffer from low self-esteem are easy targets for online predators.
Before You Meet
- Make sure you have spoken to him a few times not just online but also on the phone.
- Do not go alone, at least not the first time. Take a trusted friend along. There is really nothing embarrassing about it.
- Decide on a safe, public place as the venue. Don't plan a secret rendezvous at his place, or any other secluded area.
- Always stay connected. Leave your contact number and the address where you are going, with a close friend or family.
Remember mommy's advice about not talking to strangers? Well it holds true even in cyber world. You may love to make new friends online, but you would not want to be stalked, or have your picture staring out of a porn site, right?
