Have a Moisture-free Monsoon

Don't you just hate the monsoons because of wet walls and earthworms?
Well, here are a couple of things you could do to keep your home fresh and the moisture away.
- Get rid of moisture completely by waterproofing your home. Hire a good civil works engineer to do the job. And don't worry, you can do it even a week before the rains set in.
- If you have wrought iron furniture, apply a thick coat of anti-rust on it. Then have it freshly painted. You could also use non-scented hair oil on the furniture to keep it from rusting.
- A couple of packets of silica gel will keep your clothes fresh and free from moisture and fungus. You could use these packets in your shoes too and completely avoid smelly feet during the rains.
- Don't let moisture get into the mattress of your sofa. It invites silverfish. Place a plastic sheet over the sofa set before you put the sofa covers on. For your bed, you can use a plastic sheet under the covers.
- Buy a collapsible portable clothes stand to dry your clothes during the monsoons. You can put the stand directly under the fan so that the clothes dry faster.
- Put away those drapes and opt for blinds instead. You could try ones in laminated wood or plastic. Make sure to avoid aluminium blinds, as they tend to get corroded. Wooden blinds are also not a very good idea, as they could get warped.
- It would be great if you could fix a D-shaped brass handle to your wooden door during the monsoons. It makes it easier to open the door if the door gets jammed because of the wood expansion.
- Whenever the sun comes up, open up the windows and let the sunlight enter the home. It will help get rid of the moisture as well as take away that musty smell. You could also use a good deodorizer to freshen up your home.
- Earthworms can definitely creep you out. So keep them out of your bathroom for good with a little Dettol or phenol. Just pour a little into the drains.
