So here's what you need to keep in mind when you go shopping for inner wears when pregnant.
Apart from the size factor, you also need to be extremely careful about the comfort factor. A lacy thong or a beach bra may look sexy, but may not be an appropriate daily innerwear when you are pregnant.
"Whatever you wear, remember to avoid wearing any fabric that can increase the risk of getting an infection," informs Dr. Shagufta Ansari, Gynaecologist and Obstetrician from Prince Aly Khan Hospitals, Mumbai.
Find Support
Finding the right bra is of utmost importance during pregnancy, since your breasts tend to grow in terms of size and weight.
Things to Keep in Mind
- When buying bras remember to go for wide-set straps that are thicker in width so that the weight will be well spread and supported by the straps. In short, there will be no sagging problems and the pressure will ease from your shoulders and upper back.
- Go for softer and smoother cups to ease sore and tender breasts.
- Preferably opt for cotton bras over any other fabric like satin or lycra. Cotton is softer on the skin and has better breathing quality.
- Cotton innerwears are advised because it helps your skin to breathe, thereby avoiding the risk of any allergic reaction or infections," explains Dr. Ansari.
- Also, choose a bra with minimum seams in the cup area.
- Apart from that, remember that you are going to need more coverage for your breasts than before. Therefore, avoid any skimpy beach wear type bras.
- Remember to buy a fabric that you can easily wash because you will not be buying too many.
Fancy v/s Normal
Depending upon how quickly your breasts grow, you will have to keep changing the style and size more than once during pregnancy. Therefore, do not go ahead and buy a lingerie wardrobe at one go.
"There is nothing wrong if someone wants to wear something good looking or fancy like the ones with frills and laces. However, if it is longevity you are looking for then the thin and fragile fabrics won't hold for long," says Sitara Kumaran, a Mumbai based housewife who is eight months pregnant.
Shopping Tip
Before you go and buy yourself inner wear, it would be a good idea to do some window shopping so that you can familiarise with what is available.
If the changing cup size seems to be a problem, the best bet would be to opt for comfortable cotton sports bra.
